Riot Quest Painting Blog #6: Painting Eiryss, by Marc Harrison

I will be going through each step of how I paint Eiryss in my level two table top quality. I will paint and finish each section as I go.

Step 1 – Painting Eiryss’s Metal Surfaces

I use the following materials:

• Reaper Honed Steel
• P3 Umbral Umber
• P3 Solid Gold
• P3 Gun Corps Brown
• GW Agrax Earthshade
• Reaper Shadowed Steel
• Reaper Polished Steel
• P3 Molten Bronze
• P3 Quick Silver
• Vallejo Thinner
• Liquitex Fluid Matt Medium
• Distilled Water
• Gunk – I mix gunk in a 15ml bottle using the following:
o 1.25 tsp Distilled Water
o 1 tsp Liquitex Flow Improver
o .25 tsp Liquitex Drying Retarder

I do the following:

• Base coat the steel areas using Honed Steel.
• Base coat the gold areas using Umbral Umber and a drop of gunk.
• Base over the Umbral Umber with Solid Gold and a drop of thinner.
• Base over the wooden areas of the crossbows with Gun Corps Brown.
• Wash over the steel and gold areas using Agrax Earthshade.
• Wash the steel areas with a mixture of one-part Shadowed Steel, three-parts medium, and eight-parts water.
• Wash the gold areas with a mixture of one-part Molten Bronze, three-parts medium, and ten-parts water.
• Reclaim the steel areas with Honed Steel.
• Reclaim the gold areas with Solid Gold.
• Apply highlights to the steel areas with Polished Silver.
• Apply highlights to the gold areas with Quick Silver.
• Wash the metal areas again lightly with Agrax Earthshade.

Note: I will do more highlights to the metals after I apply varnish to Eiryss.

Step 2 – Painting Eiryss’s Skin

I use the following materials:

• Morrow White
• .03-Micron Pen - Black
• Reaper Fair Shadow
• Reaper Fair Skin
• Reaper Fair Highlight
• P3 Caspian Flesh Wash
• P3 Flesh Wash
• P3 Battlefield Brown
• P3 Sanguine Base
• Liquitex Fluid Matt Medium
• Distilled Water
• Gunk

I do the following:

• Base coat the eyes using Morrow White with a drop of gunk.
• Apply Flesh Wash around the eyes.
• Dot the eyes using a .03-micron pen.
• Base coat the skin using Fair Shadow and a drop of gunk, painting up to, not over the eyes.
• Wash using a mixture of one-part Caspian Flesh Wash, one-part medium, and three-parts water.
• Apply first highlight using Fair Flesh and a drop of gunk.
• Apply final highlight using Fair Highlight and a drop of gunk.
• Glaze using a mixture of one-part Flesh Wash and eight-parts water, applying multiple glazes. I apply a little extra around the eyes to enhance the shadow.
• Glaze the lips using a mixture of one-part Sanguine Base and ten-parts water.

Step 3 – Eiryss’s Leather

I use the following materials:

• Reaper Oiled Leather
• Reaper Ruddy Leather
• Reaper Burnt Orange
• Reaper Sepia Liner
• Reaper Brown Liner
• P3 Brown Ink
• Distilled Water
• Liquitex Fluid Matte Medium
• Gunk

I do the following:

• Base Coat using Oiled Leather and a drop of gunk.
• Wash using a mixture of one-part Ruddy Leather, three-parts medium, and four-parts water.
• Line using a mixture of one-part sepia liner, one-part brown liner, and one-part gunk.
• Reclaim using Oiled Leather.
• Highlight using Burnt Orange.
• Glaze using a mixture of one-part Brown Ink and four-parts water.

Step 4 – Painting Eiryss’s Cloak

I use the following materials:

• P3 Iosan Green
• P3 Gnarls Green
• Reaper Green Liner
• P3 Wurm Green
• P3 Sulphuric Yellow
• P3 Green Ink
• Distilled Water
• Liquitex Fluid Matte Medium
• Gunk

I do the following:

• Base coat using Iosan Green and a drop of gunk.
• Layer the first shade using a mixture of one-part Gnarls Green, three-parts medium, and five-parts water.
• Layer a second shade using a mixture of one-part Green Liner, three-parts medium, and ten-parts water.
• Layer first highlight using a mixture of one-part Wurm Green, three-parts medium, and eight-parts water.
• Layer a second highlight using a mixture of one-part Sulphuric Yellow, two-parts medium, and ten-parts water.
• Glaze using a mixture of one-part Green Ink and eight-parts water.

Step 5 – Painting Eiryss’s Cloak’s Trim and Finishing Up

I use the following materials:

• P3 Gun Corps Brown
• P3 Moldy Ochre
• P3 Bootstrap Brown
• P3 Sulphuric Yellow
• FW Sepia Ink
• P3 Solid Gold
• Liquitex Fluid Matt Medium
• Distilled Water
• Gunk

I do the following:

• Base coat using Gun Corps Brown.
• Base coat again using Moldy Ochre and a drop of gunk.
• Shade using a mixture of one-part Bootstrap Brown, three-parts medium, and four-parts water.
• Line using a mixture of one-part Brown Liner and one-part gunk. I line any other parts of the miniature I want darker at this time.
• Reclaim using Moldy Ochre.
• Apply a highlight using Sulphuric Yellow.
• Glaze using a mixture of one-part sepia ink and four-parts water.
• Touch up gold areas using Solid Gold.

In Part 7, I will base, seal, and apply the finishing touches to Jay’s Riot Quest miniatures.
